Many investors would be skeptical about starting a publishing company that has no niche. However, Tony Lyons has been able to create a flourishing business publishing from a variety of topics rather than sticking to any particular field. Since he started the company Skyhorse Publishing, they have created a backlist of 6,000 titles and last year’s revenue reached $43 million. Lyons encourages his editors to “explore different areas”, but has found the company needed more structure as it grew so different editorial teams weren’t working at “crossed purposes”. To solve the issue, recently the Skyhorse has different editorial divisions to oversee particular areas. The company is also focusing on developing new imprints.
